Can Deep Neural Networks Match the Related Objects?: A Survey on ImageNet-trained Classification Models

چکیده
Deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown the state-of-theart level of performances in wide range of complicated tasks. In recent years, the studies have been actively conducted to analyze the black box characteristics of DNNs and to grasp the learning behaviours, tendency, and limitations of DNNs. In this paper, we investigate the limitation of DNNs in image classification task and verify it with the method inspired by cognitive psychology. Through analyzing the failure cases of ImageNet classification task, we hypothesize that the DNNs do not sufficiently learn to associate related classes of objects. To verify how DNNs understand the relatedness between object classes, we conducted experiments on the image database provided in cognitive psychology. We applied the ImageNettrained DNNs to the database consisting of pairs of related and unrelated object images to compare the feature similarities and determine whether the pairs match each other. In the experiments, we observed that the DNNs show limited performance in determining relatedness between object classes. In addition, the DNNs present somewhat improved performance in discovering relatedness based on similarity, but they perform weaker in discovering relatedness based on association. Through these experiments, a novel analysis of learning behaviour of DNNs is provided and the limitation which needs to be overcome is suggested.

DeepSentiBank: Visual Sentiment Concept Classification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks
This paper introduces a visual sentiment concept classification method based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The visual sentiment concepts are adjective noun pairs (ANPs) automatically discovered from the tags of web photos, and can be utilized as effective statistical cues for detecting emotions depicted in the images. Nearly one million Flickr images tagged with these ANPs are d...

In this paper we summarize our TRECVID 2015 [12] video recognition experiments. We participated in three tasks: concept detection, object localization, and event recognition, where Qualcomm Research focused on concept detection and object localization and the University of Amsterdam focused on event detection. For concept detection we start from the very deep networks that excelled in the Image...
متن کاملDeep learning for class-generic object detection
We investigate the use of deep neural networks for the novel task of class-generic object detection. We show that neural networks originally designed for image recognition can be trained to detect objects within images, regardless of their class, including objects for which no bounding box labels have been provided. In addition, we show that bounding box labels yield a 1% performance increase o...
متن کاملDeep Epitomic Convolutional Neural Networks
Deep convolutional neural networks have recently proven extremely competitive in challenging image recognition tasks. This paper proposes the epitomic convolution as a new building block for deep neural networks. An epitomic convolution layer replaces a pair of consecutive convolution and max-pooling layers found in standard deep convolutional neural networks. The main version of the proposed m...
متن کاملRegularization methods for neural networks and related models
Neural networks have become very popular in the last few years. They have demonstrated the best results in areas of image classification, image segmentation, speech recognition, and text processing. The major breakthrough happened in early 2010s, when it became feasible to train deep neural networks (DNN) on a GPU, which made the training process several hundred times faster. At the same time, ...
